This study emphasized a focus on Kamakura City’s distinctive yato-valley terrain and conducted a multi-scale analysis ranging from the entire Namerigawa watershed of 10 km2 to smaller scales of 0.05 km2 for yato-valley regions. For detailed analysis, three temples located in the innermost areas of the yato-valleys, namely Zuisenji, Myohonji, and Kaizoji, were targeted as this study sites from the viewpoint of their historical significance, location, natural springs, and geological attributes. this study’s distinctive goal is to elucidate the characteristics of the yato-valley and rainfall-runoff in Kamakura City. The following three key findings emerged: (1) The rainfall-runoff per unit area ((m3/s)/km2) tends to decrease towards the innermost areas of the yato-valley. (2) In the small watersheds of the yato-valley interiors, the lands for education and culture, including temple precincts, account for a significant proportion, thus influence rainfall-runoff significantly. (3) According to the scale and resolution, it is necessary to select either land cover or land use when calculating rainfall-runoff. From these findings, it becomes evident that the temples located in the innermost areas of the yato-valley watersheds have the potential to contribute to mitigate the disaster because of their rainfall-runoff regulation. This study revealed that existence of historical temples and their lands can be recognized as potential elements of green infrastructure in Kamakura City, contributing to rainwater management and flood control measures. The multi-scale analysis approach employed in this study provided valuable insights into the characteristics of Kamakura City’s yato-valleys and their relationship with rainfall-runoff. By combining GIS analysis and field surveys, this study contributed to a more comprehensive understanding of the interactions between land use, land cover, and rainfall-runoff within the context of GI implementation in the Namerigawa watershed.
