This becomes obvious in water areas. The purpose of this study is experimentally to clarify the tolerance of brackish water bivalve, Corbicula japonica, to nitrate and nitrite which is the main nitrogen from agricultural land. LC50 of nitrite and nitrate was 607.4 mg/L and 3481.1 mg/L, respectively. These concentrations are higher than other aquatic organisms. Toxicity of nitrite and nitrate is thought to be the change in oxygen-carrying pigments, which causes oxygen-carrying disorders. Due to its high tolerance to anoxia, C. japonica may survive longer than other aquatic organisms even under high concentrations of nitrite and nitrate.
