Interviews were conducted with volunteer representatives and park management personnel, and questionnaires involving attitudes towards their work were distributed among volunteers at Yangmingshan National Park. The results of the interviews indicate that the volunteers play a vital role in promoting understanding of the parks among users, and also in enhancing the quality of public services provided. Analysis of the questionnaire responses show that the volunteers believe they are engaged in meaningful work and that they are basically satisfied with their contributions. On the other hand, the volunteer system is currently being implemented under the auspices of park management, and volunteers have little input in the decision making process. Volunteers expressed a strong desire to have their own organization, which would give them a stronger voice in designing their activities. This sort of independent organization would help expand and improve the functions of the park volunteer
